Popular low-cost airlines to return in Ukraine till end of 2016 - Infrastructure Minister

Popular low-cost airlines to return in Ukraine till end of 2016 - Infrastructure MinisterPopular low-cost airlines are expected to return to Ukraine to the end of 2016. However, passenger flights are going to be conducted from the beginning of the next year, Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelyan said, according to Ukrainian news agency Hromadske.

The Minister said, the country's air transportation market is on the rise as several airports increased passenger traffic by 20 percent.

At the same time, Omelyan stated he was worried about the policy some regional airports are conducting, namely, in Ivano-Frankivsk, Dnipro and Zaporizhia. They give licences to some air companies, while categorically refusing others.

The Infrastructure Ministry is looking into the situation, Omelyan says. If foul play is detected, the airports could be penalised.

In 2015 Central and Eastern European budget airline Wizz Air announced its intention to close down its Ukrainian subsidiary due to the struggling economic climate, currency depreciation and conflict in the east. Eight of 16 existing flights were cancelled, the rest flights were handed over to the Hungarian division of Wizz Air.

Later Omelyan announced the airline could return to Ukraine as a fully functional company even in 2016.
