Theresa May writes a letter to Chinese President

Theresa May writes a letter to Chinese PresidentTheresa May has written to Chinese president Xi Jinping to reassure Britains continuing commitment to strong relations with Beijing.

The letter comes after tensions emerged over the controversial nuclear power plant project.

Earlier China expressed disquiet at Mays decision to delay approval of the proposed £18bn Hinkley Point C nuclear power station amid reported concerns about Beijings role in the project. The approval was postponed just hours before the deal was due to be signed in July.

The letter was handed by the Minister for Asia and the Pacific, Alok Sharma, to his Chinese counterpart during an official visit. Alok Sharma also told Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Monday that the UK attaches great importance to cooperation with Beijing.

The letter was described as a private correspondence, so the text of the letter has not been released by Downing Street.
