Amazon launches search for $5bn second mega HQ to house up to 50,000 workers

Amazon has began a search for a second North Americanheadquarters which could house up to 50,000 members of staff.
The tech giant said on Thursday that its new base would be a full equal to its current Seattle headquarters, although it is yet to say where the office will be located.
The company, which is currently soliciting bids for the project, said it would prefer to be located in a metropolitan area with a population of more thanone million people, which would give it thepotential to attract and retain talented workers.
It said it was encouraging interested communities to think "big" and "creatively" about possible locations, which could include an urban or downtown campus. Construction of the project is expected to cost around $5bn.

Members of staff who currently work in the Seattle headquarters could be given the opportunity to move to the new base.
Amazon said it expects to hire new teams and executives in the new building, known as HQ2.
Jeff Bezos, Amazons founder and chief executive, said: Amazon HQ2 will bring billions of dollars in up-front and ongoing investments, and tens of thousands of high-paying jobs. Were excited to find a second home.
Amazon estimated that its investments in Seattle from between 2010 and 2016 has resulted in an additional $38bn generated for the citys economy.
