Svetlana Alexievich in the shortlist of the British non-fiction award

Svetlana Alexievich in the shortlist of the British non-fiction awardBelarusian author of Ukrainian origin is to compete for £30,000.

Last year Nobel laureate for literature, Svetlana Alexievich is one of the four nominees for Baillie Gifford prize for non-fiction.

The winner will be announced on 15 November.

The four titles on this year’s shortlist are:

Second-Hand Time, Svetlana Alexievich, translated by Bela Shayevich (Fitzcarraldo Editions).

Negroland: A Memoir, Margo Jefferson (Granta Books)·

The Return: Fathers, Sons and the Land In Between, Hisham Matar (Viking).

East West Street: On the Origins of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity, Philippe Sands (Weidenfeld & Nicolson).

Alexievich who is Belarusian a campaigning journalist was awarded with Nobel Prize for “her polyphonic writings, a monument to suffering and courage in our time.”
