Scientists have conducted experiments on seven patients. Natural plant extract is capable of dissolving calcium oxalate - stones component in the human kidney.
This was stated by US researchers from the University of Houston.
Chemists have found that a compound called hydroxycitrate, is an effective inhibitor of calcium oxalate crystal growth and, under certain conditions is able to dissolve them.
It is noted that usually the people who are prone to kidney stones, it is recommended to take citrate in the form of supplements, but some patients have serious side effects.
Researchers using atomic force microscopy to study the interaction between the crystals as a citrate and Hydroxycitrate and calcium oxalate.
During the study, the researchers resorted to density functional theory - method of calculation of the electronic structure of systems consisting of many particles. With it, they determined how hydroxycitrate affects calcium.
As a result, it turned out that it forms a strong bond with the crystal surface, causing the release of calcium atoms and resulting in the dissolution of the crystal.
Scientists have conducted experiments on seven patients who took the supplements for three days. The results showed that hydroxycitrate easily excreted in the urine, which is a prerequisite for an efficient operation of the drug.
But chemists point out that to create a full-fledged drug complex, additional safety tests, the necessary dosage and efficacy.
