Russian proxies attack ATO forces 56 times in last day
The combined Russian-separatist forces attacked Ukrainian army positions in eastern Ukraine 56 times in the past 24 hours, the press center of the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) wrote on Facebook early Tuesday.
"The situation was most intense near the town of Horlivka and in the vicinity of the city of Donetsk. The enemy fired from grenade launchers of different types and heavy machine guns on our fortified positions in the village of Opytne, the towns of Avdiyivka and Maryinka, and Butivka coal mine. The militants fired mortars near the village of Pisky. Not far from Horlivka, the enemy fired on the Ukrainian positions from grenade launchers, heavy machine guns, small arms, as well as mortars," the report says.
"The Russian-backed mercenaries fired banned 120mm mortars six times on our fortified positions in the villages of Zaitseve and Mayorsk. Due to the fact that the enemy intensified shelling of Zaitseve and fired from different firing positions at night, the leadership of ATO forces in Donetsk and Luhansk regions was forced to announce the temporary closure of the checkpoint in Zaitseve to ensure safety of residents," the press center said.
