Venezuelan public workers get fired over referendum

Venezuelan public workers get fired over referendumVenezuelan officials should sack all public sector employees, who requested a recall referendum against President Nicolas Maduro, a Socialist Party spokesman said Monday.

Maduro has given a 48-hour deadline for five key ministers to dismiss those in senior positions who signed the petition. The petition is the first step towards a referendum to oust Maduro, who is in power since 2013.

"Today, by order of the [governing Socialist] party president Nicolas Maduro, five ministries ... cannot have people that are against the Revolution and the president in management positions,” said Jorge Rodriguez, the leader of the Socialist Party in Venezuela.

The list includes the ministries of food, basic industries and finance among others.

Hundreds of public workers have already said they were dismissed for signing a petition for a referendum against the unpopular president, according to local media.
