5 elements of our online identity

5 elements of our online identityAfter a series of racial and sexual harassment, when it was compared to a monkey, an American actress Leslie Jones stopped using Twitter. Defeated stream of abuse, she wrote before leaving: "Now I understand why many celebrities go from here, there are crazy people."

In the Persian Gulf after the attempted coup in Turkey Emirati singer Hussein Al Dzhasmi presented cynical song about the incident. Then the Internet it inundated with rude comments. Singer called upon to control myself. Such abuse is not something new to the social networks: many are abused ridicule, insult and offend. The analysis of this new space, which changed human communication, it is interesting to understand its impact on society and on the psychological state of its members.

According to the well-known thesis of sociologist Mead (George Herbert Mead, 1863-1931, American psychologist and sociologist, a representative of the Chicago school - ca. Perevi), each person has two opposing and at the same time independent of each other element: this "inner person" ( "I"), which represents our inner world, and the "social identity" ( "I"), the outer shell, which helps to build relations with the outside world. In my opinion, it is possible, and the third component - the "digital identity". A strange person who is behind the screen in a maze of sites. Why does our behavior on the Internet is different from behavior in real life? Why abuse so common in the network?

The reason may be the so-called "digital license" freedom without any social norms. It makes communication network different from natural communication. There are five factors that also explain our behavior on the Internet:

1. Asynchronously. Communication on the Internet is out of sync: response to a tweet posted a few days ago, there is a view of the current situation, which could radically change since it was written in the message. These gaps lead to misunderstandings and possible changes in the nature of the discussion. This property is used to start psychological warfare and attacks on other users, who have not been able to react in time.

2. Anonymity. This factor is easy to understand. Getting into the world of the Internet, we find ourselves in a world of nicknames and anonymous identity. Our emotions and instincts captivate us. And we pass all restrictions and is expressed without fear of social norms and legal prohibitions.

3. Equal force. On the Internet everyone is equal: politicians and farmers, students and schoolchildren. You only have a name without any formalities and regalia. You can be whoever you want, and fly as high as you want. Such a situation removes all obstacles to the expression of opinion, without fear of being punished.

4. Masking. When you have received this article, you do not know whether the author was happy at the time of its writing, or immersed in depression. In the discussion with someone of something on Facebook, you do not see facial expressions, can not read the body language, which carries a lot of meanings. There is no sound and real gestures strongly affects our communication model.

5. Illusion. This tendency to create some of his special way for others. Few traits of which he can tell you on the Internet, so it starts to fill in the gaps and there is a completely different person, perhaps, has nothing to do with this. And he is already beginning to act on their fantasies.

These factors shape our digital identity, different from us almost everything. We plunge into the magic world where we are freed from the constraints in terms. However, the only limiting ourselves only to us.
