Phelps swam the distance in the final in 1 minute 54.66 seconds. Silver, with a lag of almost two seconds, won the Japanese Kosuke Hagino (1.56,61). Bronze in Chinese Wang Shun (1.57,05). World record holder at this distance the American Ryan Lochte became only the 5th (1.57,47).

Earlier in Rio Phelps won gold in the 200 m butterfly and freestyle relays (4 100 and 4 200 meters).

Phelps is the only sport in the history of the 22-time Olympic champion. All in all 26 American medals of the Olympic Games.
