Protesters in France demand to shut down the "Jungle" refugee camp

Photo: ReutersPhoto: ReutersTruck drivers and farmers started to block highway movement on the way to Calais where the infamous refugee camp "Jungle' has been placed, the BBC Russian Service.

Protesters have been joined by by owners of local shops, port workers and trade unions.

The protesters formed a human chain across the road leading to the Eurotunnel and the port of Calais, from where ferries leave to Britain.

Hundreds of demonstrators with posters calling to close the refugee camp, gathered at the entrances to the Eurotunnel and the port terminal.

The camp, according to protesters, interferes with the normal life of the city

Truck drivers report of the frequent threats by organized gangs and individual migrants trying to get into the vans and illegally sneak into Britain.

Farmers suffer from the fact that part of the crop is destroyed due to the ever-increasing size of the camp, where about 7,000 people from Sudan, Syria, Eritrea and other troubled places are living in appalling conditions.

In February 2016, the French authorities had broken the southern part of the camp, trying to reduce the number of refugees living there, but their number increased again, and now the protesters demanding the closure of its northern part.
