Oxford University has become the first UK university to top the Times Higher Education world university rankings 2016-2017.
Oxford knocks to the second place California Institute of Technology, the top performer for the past five years. It is also the first time a US institution does not take the top spot in a 12-years history of the rankings.
However, the North American universities still dominates the list with 148 universities in the top 980 and 63 in the top 200. The rest of the top five is filled by Stanford University in third, the University of Cambridge in fourth, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in fifth.
Also Switzerland’s ETH Zurich – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, has cemented its position in the top 10, landing at ninth for the second year in a row; last year the institution became the first non-Anglo-American institution to make the world rankings top 10 for a decade.
Still the rankings show a mixed picture for European universities, while Asian institutions continue to rise.
Germany has 41 institutions in the rankings, nine of which make the top 100. And, for the first time, the Netherlands' 13 leading research-intensive universities all made it into the top 200.
But other European countries are losing ground. France, Spain and Italy have each lost a representative in the top 200.
Asia, however, continues to rise up the rankings. It has four new entries in the top 200 group, bringing its total to 19.
The Times Higher tables rank universities worldwide on measures including teaching, research and international outlook - for example, numbers of overseas students and staff.
