Turkey blocks WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter The most popular social networks have been shut down.

Internet users in Turkey have been experiencing difficulties accessing social media amid latest crackdown.

The messaging service WhatsApp was not working, and users also reported severe problems accessing Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and other sites.

No direct confirmation came from the officials, yet Prime Minister Binali Yildirm said that "from time to time for security reasons we can use such measures".

"These are temporary measures. Once the danger is passed, everything returns to normal," he told reporters in Istanbul in televised comments.

Media reports the interruptions were due to the arrests of opposition leaders.
