“Super bacteria” versus Rio's Olympic

“Super bacteria” versus Rio's OlympicScientists have found dangerous drug-resistant bacteria off beaches in Rio de Janeiro that will host Olympic swimming events and in a lagoon where rowing and canoe athletes will compete when the Games start on August 5.

The "super bacteria" entered the city's waterways when sewage coming from local hospitals got channeled into the bay, the lead researcher Renata Picao told CNN.

Among the beaches flagged were Flamengo and Botafogo, which border the bay where Olympic sailors are scheduled to compete.
Despite concerns, neither Picao nor international Olympic authorities recommend moving the sailing venue.

Ipanema and Leblon beaches, the most popular with tourists, had samples that tested positive for super bacteria 50 and 60 percent of the time, respectively.

With a month before The Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games to go safety and financial issues continue to plague the international event.
