Georgian coal miners end strike, get a raise

Georgian coal miners end strike, get a raiseGeorgian coal miners have ended their two-week strike after the coal company agreed to a raise.

A lawmaker who attended the seven-hour talks that wrapped up Tuesday morning said the company agreed to raise the wages for the miners by 10 percent.

More than 500 people from two coal mines have been on strike for more than two weeks, saying their wages have not increased since a 2012 strike, despite the rising cost of living. The strike culminated last week when the miners stormed the headquarters of the mining company.

The Georgian lari has nearly halved in value to the dollar since 2014, causing inflation and effectively weakening the value of the miners' salaries, which are now typically below $200 a month.
