R.F. isn't obliged to follow international opinion on Mejlis issue - PeskovRussian Federation is not obliged to follow the international opinion while dealing with its domestic issues.

This is how Russian President's Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov reacted at the U.S. Department of State's appeal for cancelling the ban of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People.

U.S. calles on R.F. to cancel ban of Mejlis - State Department

Peskov insists recognizing the institution as terroristic and objectionable is fully under Russian legal competence and cannot be affected from abroad.

The so-called Crimean prosecutor Natalia Poklonskaya responded with an advise. In her opinion, if the U.S. authorities defend the Crimean Tatars' rights and consider Mejlis a democratic organization, they should allow their activity in the U.S.

On April 18, Russia officially recognized Crimean Tatar Mejlis as 'extremist' organization and prohibited its activity. Ukraine immediately answered saying the self-appointed Russian-backed Crimean government strictly violates the rights of the local citizens by "deliberately humiliating the dignity of the Crimean Tatars."
