No less than 20 people remain missing as bridge collapsed in India

No less than 20 people remain missing as bridge collapsed in IndiaAt least two people drowned and 20 others are missing as two buses swept away in swollen Savitri River after a British-era bridge collapsed near Mahad in Maharashtra's Raigad district.

The bridge was a part of a highway connecting the city of Mumbai with the beach resort state of Goa in western India.

Officials said two buses carrying passengers plunged into a flooded river after the collapse early on Wednesday. Rescuers fished out bodies of two men from the river and an intense search is on to trace those missing.

"The buses are not traceable within a kilometre of the bridge. Due to downstream current, the buses may have been swept further away," Rakesh Ranjan of the National Disaster Response Force told.

OP Singh, chief of the state-run National Disaster Response Force, said 80 rescuers, including divers, rushed to the area but their efforts were being hampered by heavy rains. Traffic has been diverted to a new bridge in the area.

Maharashtra's chief minister, tweeted that the two buses were transporting 18 passengers, two drivers and two conductors, bringing the number of missing people to 22. He also said that the bridge that collapsed were two rather than one. "There were two parallel bridges; one is a new bridge and one constructed during the British era. The old one collapsed," he posted on Twitter.
