Scientists have found an unknown virus

Scientists have found an unknown virusAlthough the virus has been found in connection with the death of the fish, it is necessary to do more work to find out whether it is the main culprit, biologists say.

Exploring the extinction of largemouth bass in Wisconsin waters, scientists have discovered a previously unknown virus. Details of the study are given in the Journal of General Virology.
Previously, University of Wisconsin issued a press release in which it was reported that researchers have isolated an unknown virus from dead fish collected as a sample in one of the lakes in Wisconsin during the mass extinction of fish.

Scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison have deciphered the genome of the virus, but could not find it in any of the databases. The researchers say the virus, informally known as reovirus largemouth bass, is new to science.

Although the virus has been found in connection with the death of the fish, it is necessary to do more work to find out whether it is the main culprit, scientists say. However, it leaves no doubt that this virus is a distant relative of other viruses associated with disease in other species of fish, making it a prime suspect in the extinction of fish in Wisconsin waters. While there is no evidence that the new virus could pose a risk to human health.
