Norway may block the return of Britain to the European Free Trade Association

Norway may block the return of Britain to the European Free Trade AssociationNorway coud block any attempt to Britain to join the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) - a group of countries that have access to the single European market without being part of the EU.

Members of the Norwegian government in the next few weeks hold talks with David Davis, the Minister, who cares of Britain out of the EU.
Norway is not an EU member, but has access to the single market through membership in the European Economic Area, which brings together all EU Member States and three of the four members of EFTA: Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, but not Switzerland.

Minister for European Affairs Elizabeth Age Aspaker Norway said that her country is increasingly discussing the possibility of joining Britain to EFTA.

"I'm not sure that would be a good idea to let a large membership in the organization. This will change the balance that is not always in the interests of Norway," - she said.

She also confirmed that Britain can become a member only by the unanimous consent of all countries, thus ensuring Norway's veto.
Proponents of withdrawal of Britain from the EU suggest that EFTA membership would be one way to preserve access to the single market after leaving the European Union.

Britain has been a member of, but then withdrew from it after joining the EU.
