Scientists have created a material with amazing properties
As reported in the journal Science Advances, a unique composition of titanium and gold can make a revolution in prosthetics.
Currently, the most preferred material for the creation of artificial knee and hip joints is titanium. Also, the metal leads and dental structures. It is popular and in demand in orthopedics and prosthetics due to a number of positive characteristics: titanium is durable, wear-resistant and non-toxic. However, after the implants are degraded after prosthesis and should be replaced with new roughly every 10 years.
A team of scientists from Rice University has been able to find them an alternative and create a powerful fusion (it is described by the authors as a material, which is four times stronger than pure titanium), which - and this is most important - can be used in medicine, combined with living tissue. It is believed that the new alloy can be used to create a more durable implant because the rate of degradation will be 70 per cent lower than that of pure titanium implants.
Alloy called beta-Ti3Au, comprises a gold and titanium in a ratio of three to one. The metal atoms are densely packed in a cubic crystal structure. In addition to biomedical structures, beta-Ti3Au promising in other sectors: the oil industry, the production of sports equipment and so on.
