Australian aid worker freed in Afghanistan

Australian aid worker freed in AfghanistanKerry Jane Wilson, an Australian aid worker kidnapped in Afghanistan four months ago, was freed on Sunday by Afghan special forces near the eastern city of Jalalabad, officials said on Monday.

Wilson was working with an NGO when she was taken from the company's office in Jalalabad by armed men in April. She is the director of Zardozi, a charity which helps poor women start their own businesses. Wilson was working in the region for 20 years.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop confirmed in a statement that Kerry Jane Wilson had been freed and was "safe and well".

"I deeply appreciate the work of the authorities in Afghanistan whose support and assistance facilitated her release," Bishop said, declining provide further details about the circumstances of the release.

No ransom was paid for her release.

Kidnapping for ransom has become a problem in Afghanistan, as militants are trying to gain money for their operations in such a way.
