10,000th Syrian refugee arrived in U.S.

10,000th Syrian refugee arrived in U.S.The U.S. has accepted the 10,000th refugee from Syria on Monday as part of President Obama's policy to vastly increase the number of humanitarian admissions from the war-torn country.

Obama administration meets its goal to settle 10,000 refugees during a fiscal year a month earlier it ends in September. Officials have already suggested that the ceiling for next year could be even higher.

"While refugee admissions are only a small part of our broader humanitarian efforts in Syria and the region, the president understood the important message this decision would send, not just to the Syrian people but to the broader international community," national security advisor Susan Rice said.

Over the last year, the U.S. government has resettled Syrian refugees in dozens of states; Michigan and California have taken the most.

The refugee’s issue makes also a great point in this year presidential campaigns. Republican Donald Trump has called the refugee program a "Trojan horse" for terrorists. Democrat Hillary Clinton has proposed increasing the Syrian refugee ceiling even higher, to 65,000.

Under the Refugee Act of 1980, the U.S. president has the authority to set refugee limits after consulting Congress.
