UK to start building a wall on the road to Calais

UK to start building a wall on the road to CalaisUK will started the construction of the wall near Calais' Jungle migrant camp very soon in order to stop migrant’s flow, Home Office minister Robert Goodwill said on Tuesday.

The "Great Wall of Calais", as some media calls it, will be 4m (13ft) high and will run for 1km (0.6 miles) along both sides of the main road to Calais port.

Goodwill said security was being "stepped up" in Calais as migrants from the Middle East and Africa continue to try to jump on vehicles heading to Britain.

Goodwill also added that the wall was part of a 17 million pound ($22.75 million) package of security measures agreed by Britain and France in March.

"We are going to start building this big new wall as part of the 17 million package that we are doing with the French ... We've done the fence and now we're doing the wall," Goodwill said on Tuesday.

But Richard Burnett, chief executive of the Road Haulage Association, called the plan a "poor use of taxpayers' money".

Work is expected to start this month. The whole construction is due to be finished by the end of the year.
