Israeli and Palestinian leaders agree to meet in Moscow

Israeli and Palestinian leaders agree to meet in MoscowPalestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have reached an agreement “in principle” to meet in Moscow, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova confirmed on Thursday.

“The most important thing is to pick the right timing,” Zakharova said, while no date has been given for the meeting.

“We are convinced that there is a need to resume the negotiations, which would be a factor serving the interests in normalizing the situation,” TASS news agency cited Zakharova as saying.

It would be their first face-to-face meeting of two leaders in years. Abbas and Netanyahu exchanged a brief handshake at the global climate change conference in Paris last year, but have not held a public working meeting since 2010.

Abbas said earlier this week that a meeting scheduled in Moscow had been postponed at Israel's request.

As two leaders could hardly agree on any issue, setting an agenda will be a difficult task. But the fact of meeting to be organized is seen as progress.
