Facebook and Twitter to tackle fake newsFacebook and Twitter became a part of a network of over 30 news and technology companies aimed at tackling fake news and improving the quality of information on social media, First Draft group said on Tuesday.

“Twitter is thrilled to be a part of the First Draft Partner Network so that we can collaboratively shape best practices, ethical guidelines and tools when it comes to discovering and verifying eyewitness media,” Niketa Patel, News Partnerships Manager at Twitter, said.

“The First Draft partner network represents an important opportunity for the news industry to work together on best practices, trainings, research and more. We're excited to help and support newsrooms that are experts in using eyewitness content,” Áine Kerr, Manager of Journalism Partnerships at Facebook, has said, commenting the issue.

Facebook, the world's largest social media network with about 1.7 billion users each month, has been criticized for its role in spreading fake stories and misinformation. Twitter, with about 140 million daily users, plays a crucial role in breaking news and disseminating eyewitness content.

First Draft Coalition was formed in June 2015 with support from Google News Lab in order to create a voluntary code of practice, promote news literacy among social media users, and launch a platform where members can verify questionable news stories.

“This network will also create a feedback loop for representatives from each social media platform to connect with journalists and develop ideas for ways to streamline the verification process, improve the experience of eyewitnesses and increase news literacy amongst social media users,” the group said on its website.

The group also includes such news giants as the New York Times, Washington Post, BuzzFeed News, Agence France-Presse and CNN.
