Pro-Russian candidate Dodon won first round of presidential elections in MoldovaSecond round of presidential elections is likely to happen – the support of the front runner, Socialist Igor Dodon, goes beond 50%. These results were announced by the Central Election Committee of the country.

After counting 86.7% of protocols Dodon’s results are 49.99%. With the further count Dodon’s support goes lower, reports Moldovan daily Newsmaker.md.

His main competitor Maia Sandu, the representative of the joined opposition, gained 37%.

Win of Dodon may make relations of Kyiv and Chisinau even more complicated. As it was reported earlier, the leader of the presidential race stated that he Crimea belongs to Russia.

The final days of the campaign have bordered on farce. Sandu and Dodon each accused the other of being in the pocket of Vlad Plahotniuc, the country's most powerful businessman, who critics say wields an outsize influence on Moldovan politics.

The ruling Democratic party's candidate, Marian Lupu, bowed out of the race on Wednesday, saying he wanted to improve the chances of keeping Moldova on a pro-European path. But Sandu said the move was a ploy to boost Dodon's chances.
