Thursday, December 1 is a World AIDS Day which is dedicated to fighting the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Ukraine remains one of the leaders for the number of people with "positive" AIDS status in Europe.
According to the Chairman of the Coordination Council BO "All-Ukrainian Network of People Living with HIV / AIDS" Dmitry Sherembey 22 thousand people with HIV / AIDS are officially registered in Ukraine annually.
For the first time in Ukraine the program for treating people with AIDS to stop the epidemic will be funded to the extent that 101 thousand of the infected people will survive next year. They will receive therapy, more than 30 thousand – for tuberculosis. And this funding will save in general 150 thousand lives, according to him.
According to the Health Minister Ulana Suprun, thanks to the Global Fund projects the increase in deaths stopped for the first time in 20 years of epidemic and more than 88 thousand people with HIV received treatment.
"We are very much pleased to confirm the significant progress of this year achieved through joint efforts of the Government of Ukraine, civil society and international partners. We should note the determination of the new team in the Health Ministry on Forming the Institute of Public Health," the Head of Grant Management Division of the Global Fund Mark Edington said.
He also noted the increase in funding for programs to fight HIV and tuberculosis by almost 140% in 2017 and the beginning of health care reform in the penitentiary service.
Getting a clear plan of Ukraine HIV and tuberculosis treatment programs support over the next three years will allow the Global Fund to determine the conditions of funding in 2018-2020 years. The decision on the new project will be made by the Board of the Global Fund in November 2016.
Earlier it was reported that the Cabinet of Ministers approved concept of health care reform. The Ministry of Health noted that there will be a new model of health care financing system.
