Former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and former deputy head of the Alliance Alexander Vershbow call on the UN Security Council to decide on the establishment of a peacekeeping mission in the territories occupied by Russia in the eastern Ukraine in order to restore the sovereignty of Ukraine. This was reported in the analytical center Rasmussen Global in Brussels, reports Ukrinform.
"Big friends of Ukraine Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Alexander Vershbow urge the UN Security Council to approve peacekeeping and stabilizing forces that would have the confidence to restore Ukraine's sovereignty," the politicians stressed.
They criticized the position expressed by Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the conditions for the creation of such a peacekeeping mission, which are designed to undermine its effectiveness.
"The devil is always in the details, but the question of the UN peacekeepers is now really at the stage of discussion. The EU Security Council should be clearly involved in these proposals, "Rasmussen said.
He reminded that earlier Russia had always threatened to veto a decision on the UN peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.

The politicians propose to introduce the UN peacekeeping mission to Ukraine in three stages. The first is the deployment of peacekeeping forces on the demarcation line. Further - to move the contingent deeper into the occupied territories. The third phase refers to the full presence of the peacekeeping contingent, including control over the border with the Russian Federation.
As it was reported earlier deployment of the UN peacekeepers to Donbas at the suggestion of Russia is unacceptable for Ukraine, according to the representative of the Trilateral Contact Group on Donbas in Minsk Leonid Kuchma.
