Ukraine is celebrating the Day of Ukrainian cinema on September 9.
The celebration was introduced by President Leonid Kuchma in 1996, in order to support the work of Ukrainan movie industry.
Ukrainian cinema started in 1893, when engineer Iosyp Tymchenko developed a device called kineskop, that could record and project film, two years before Lumiere brothers presented theirs. Then he made his first recording of horsemen and lance throwers.
Three years later, photographer Alfred Fedetskiy filmed a few stories in Kharkiv, and in December 1896 showed the movie in Kharkiv Opera House. The same year French movies started to be shown in Lviv.
In 1930, Ukraine introduced its first sound film, - documentary by Dziga Vertov Enthusiasm: Donbas symphony, and the next year the Ukrainian audience saw feature film Front line by Soloviov.
